Our verdict
4.2/5

This score is editorial — based on labels, recall history, and veterinary guidance, not a lab test. How we evaluated.

Read the life-stage line, then the calorie on that bag

NutriSource cat food review, on this page, is eight listings already linked. Cat and Kitten Chicken and Rice is grain-inclusive, formulated for all life stages, with a calculated line of about 470 kcal per cup. Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver is the grain-inclusive sibling at about 466 kcal per cup on the current shop panel. Senior and Weight Management is the exception: adult maintenance, about 319 kcal per cup on the calculated line, with a nutrient table that also prints 3,359 kcal per kg beside 3,250. Country Select is grain-free poultry at about 479 kcal per cup. Ocean Select leads with trout at about 500 kcal per cup. Chicken and Salmon Select is the dense grain-free bag at about 564 kcal per cup, and lamb meal is still on that ingredient list. PureVita Chicken and Peas is the single-animal-protein grain-free bag at about 484 kcal per cup. Turkey and Turkey Liver wet prints two calorie lines on the current shop page, 181 and 204 per 5.5 oz can. Good 4 Life is a brand supplement story. It is not a feeding trial.

How we evaluated

This evaluation uses published product labels, guaranteed analyses, and recall records.

We read the current Discover NutriSource pages for the eight recipes already linked, plus the brand’s Good 4 Life article, the AAFCO label guide, the FDA complete-and-balanced page, the 2021 Tuffy’s recall announcement, and FDA’s 2019 DCM question page. The score is an editorial label fit. Nobody fed these bags for this page, and nobody weighed a cat.

Editorial evaluation from published labels / literature — not a lab test or boarding trial.

What this NutriSource cat food review is comparing

NutriSource cat food review is a label problem before it is a brand problem. The shop pages call the company family-owned. The FDA recall page names Tuffy’s Pet Foods as the company behind a 2021 dog-food announcement. The cat foods already linked here are not one recipe.

  • Chicken and Rice. Grain-inclusive, all life stages, about 470 kcal per cup on the calculated line.
  • Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver. Grain-inclusive sibling, about 466 kcal per cup on the shop panel.
  • Senior and Weight Management. Adult maintenance, about 319 kcal per cup, with a second density figure in the nutrient table.
  • Country Select. Grain-free poultry, about 479 kcal per cup.
  • Ocean Select. Trout first, about 500 kcal per cup.
  • Chicken and Salmon Select. About 564 kcal per cup, with lamb meal on the list.
  • PureVita Chicken and Peas. Single animal protein, about 484 kcal per cup.
  • Turkey and Turkey Liver, canned. All life stages, with 181 and 204 both printed.

The life-stage line is the filter

AAFCO’s label guide treats the nutritional adequacy statement as the way you match the animal to the food. Growth, maintenance, gestation and lactation, and all life stages are not the same quantities. Complete means the nutrients are there. Balanced means the ratios fit that stage. A growing kitten is not an adult cat on a smaller scoop of a maintenance formula.

Seven of these shop pages say all life stages. Senior and Weight Management says maintenance of adult cats, in the bullet and again in the adequacy sentence. FDA’s complete-and-balanced page is the plain-language version of why that sentence exists. A treat can skip it. A cat’s only food should not.

NutriSource Cat and Kitten Chicken and Rice

NutriSource Cat and Kitten Chicken and Rice

Best for: A healthy kitten or adult when you want brown rice and oatmeal in the recipe and will use the chicken-and-rice chart

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages.
Guarantee
Protein 32% min, fat 19% min, fiber 5% max, moisture 10% max, taurine 0.15% min.
Calculated calorie
4,134 kcal per kg, 470 kcal per cup.
Same page, other calorie
Nutrient table prints 471 kcal per cup and 4,086 kcal per kg.
Cup
About 4.1 oz (116 g). Divide the chart into 2 to 3 meals.

The shop page lists chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, and peas ahead of chicken fat, menhaden fish meal, yeast extract, oatmeal, beet pulp, and tomato pomace. The brand calls chicken the first ingredient and says the recipe is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Guaranteed analysis: crude protein 32.0% min, crude fat 19.0% min, crude fiber 5.0% max, moisture 10.0% max, magnesium 0.08% min, taurine 0.15% min, omega-6 2.5% min, omega-3 0.4% min, and 100 million CFU per pound. The calculated calorie line is 4,134 kcal per kg and 470 kcal per cup. The nutrient table on the same page prints 471 kcal per cup and 4,086 kcal per kg, and it prints typical protein at 31.25%. Use the guarantee as the floor and do not treat 31.25% as a replacement for 32%.

A standard cup holds about 4.1 oz (116 g). The chart says to divide the amount into 2 to 3 feedings. An adult line for 8 to 10 lb is 3/8 to 1/2 cup. The page says to begin moistened food at 3 to 4 weeks, to split a kitten’s day into 3 to 4 feedings, and that kittens may eat 2 to 3 times the volume of an adult of the same weight. It also says food intake during gestation and lactation may rise 2 to 4 times, and that a switch should be mixed over 5 days. The mineral parenthesis on this ingredient list is iron, zinc, copper, and manganese proteinate. It does not print the words BioPlex or Sel-Plex, and it does not list selenium yeast.

Pros

  • The statement covers all life stages, and the feeding chart splits kittens from adults
  • Brown rice and oatmeal are named, so this is not a grain-free bag

Cons

  • The typical nutrient table prints protein at 31.25%, under the 32% minimum guarantee
  • Peas sit ahead of the fish meal, so grain-inclusive is not pea-free
NutriSource Cat and Kitten Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver

NutriSource Cat and Kitten Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver

Best for: A healthy cat already on Chicken and Rice when you want salmon and chicken liver in a grain-inclusive bag

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages.
First ingredients
Chicken meal, brown rice, peas, salmon, chicken livers.
Guarantee
Protein 32% min, fat 19% min, fiber 5% max, moisture 10% max, taurine 0.15% min.
Shop calorie
4,106 kcal per kg, 466 kcal per cup.
Cup
About 4.0 oz (114 g).

The current shop page opens with chicken meal, brown rice, peas, salmon, and chicken livers, then chicken fat, flax seed, yeast extract, oatmeal, beet pulp, and salmon oil. Menhaden fish meal is further down. The page says chicken meal is the first ingredient and that the recipe is formulated for all life stages. Guarantees on that page: crude protein 32.0% min, crude fat 19.0% min, crude fiber 5.0% max, moisture 10.0% max, magnesium 0.08% min, iron 140 mg/kg min, copper 20 mg/kg min, manganese 15 mg/kg min, zinc 110 mg/kg min, taurine 0.15% min, omega-6 2.7% min, omega-3 0.6% min. The calculated calorie line is 4,106 kcal per kg and 466 kcal per cup. A cup holds about 4.0 oz (114 g). The feeding note says to divide the chart into 2 to 3 meals.

This is a rotational sibling of Chicken and Rice, not a copy of it. The fat floor matches. The omega-3 floor is higher on this page (0.6% versus 0.4%). The mineral parenthesis here includes sodium selenite. The Chicken and Rice parenthesis we read does not. Do not move 466 kcal onto the Chicken and Rice bag, or 470 onto this one.

Pros

  • Same life-stage lane as Chicken and Rice, with salmon oil named later in the list
  • The shop calorie is printed per cup, so it is not the senior cup

Cons

  • Chicken meal is first, not chicken muscle meat
  • Peas are still the third ingredient
NutriSource Senior and Weight Management, Chicken Meal and Peas

NutriSource Senior and Weight Management, Chicken Meal and Peas

Best for: A less active, overweight, or senior adult cat when the statement on the bag is maintenance, not growth

Adequacy
Maintenance of adult cats. Not all life stages.
Guarantee
Protein 29% min, fat 9% min and 12% max, fiber 12% max, moisture 10% max, taurine 0.1% min.
Calculated calorie
3,250 kcal per kg, 319 kcal per cup.
Same page, other density
Nutrient table prints 319 kcal per cup and 3,359 kcal per kg.
Typical row
Protein 28.50%, fat 8.00%, fiber 8.87%, carbohydrate 37.48%. Cup about 3.5 oz.

The shop page lists chicken meal, peas, pea fiber, barley, and oatmeal, then beet pulp, menhaden fish meal, and chicken fat. It says the recipe is for less active, overweight, or senior cats, and both the bullet and the adequacy sentence say maintenance of adult cats. Guarantees: crude protein 29.0% min, crude fat 9.0% min and 12.0% max, crude fiber 12.0% max, moisture 10.0% max, taurine 0.1% min, omega-6 1.0% min, omega-3 0.2% min. The calculated line is 3,250 kcal per kg and 319 kcal per cup. The nutrient table prints 319 kcal per cup and 3,359 kcal per kg. Typical figures on that table are protein 28.50%, fat 8.00%, fiber 8.87%, and carbohydrate 37.48%. A cup is about 3.5 oz. The BioPlex bullet on this page names zinc, iron, copper, and manganese. The mineral parenthesis matches those four proteinates and does not list selenium yeast.

Do not feed this as a kitten’s only food. All life stages and adult maintenance are different statements. Also do not replace the 12% fiber maximum with a 16% figure from a formula-finder row. The product page’s maximum is 12%. The typical fiber printed beside it is 8.87%, which is under that maximum, not a new guarantee. Typical fat at 8% is under the 9% minimum the same page guarantees. Keep both lines. Do not average them.

Pros

  • The life-stage line is adult maintenance, which the kitten bags are not
  • The cup is the lowest calorie of the dry foods on this page

Cons

  • Typical protein and fat on the nutrient table sit under the minimum guarantees
  • A kitten's only food is the wrong use of this statement
NutriSource Country Select grain-free cat food

NutriSource Country Select grain-free cat food

Best for: A healthy cat when you want chicken, duck meal, and turkey meal and you accept peas and sweet potato

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages. Grain-free.
Opener
Chicken, duck meal, chicken meal, turkey meal, peas, sweet potatoes.
Guarantee
Protein 36% min, fat 18% min, fiber 5% max, moisture 10% max, taurine 0.2% min.
Calorie
4,023 kcal per kg, 479 kcal per cup. The nutrient table matches those two figures.
Also named
Dried whole goat milk and salmon oil. Cup about 4.2 oz.

The shop page lists chicken, duck meal, chicken meal, turkey meal, peas, and sweet potatoes, then chicken fat, garbanzo beans, pea starch, dried yeast, flax seed, dried egg, pea fiber, and dried whole goat milk, with salmon oil later. It says chicken is the first ingredient and that the recipe is formulated for all life stages. Guarantees: crude protein 36.0% min, crude fat 18.0% min, crude fiber 5.0% max, moisture 10.0% max, taurine 0.2% min, omega-6 2.8% min, omega-3 0.8% min, and 100 million CFU per pound. Calculated calories are 4,023 kcal per kg and 479 kcal per cup, and the nutrient table repeats 479 and 4,023. Typical carbohydrate on that table is 23.75%. A cup is about 4.2 oz.

This is not the grain-inclusive Chicken and Rice bag with the grains removed and nothing added. Peas, sweet potatoes, garbanzo beans, and pea starch are the carbohydrate story. The taurine floor is 0.2%, higher than the 0.15% on the two Cat and Kitten bags. A wet Country Select can exists on the brand site. It is not the dry listing linked here.

Pros

  • Protein floor is 36%, above the grain-inclusive 32% bags
  • The calorie line and the nutrient table agree at 479 kcal per cup

Cons

  • Peas and sweet potatoes mean grain-free is not legume-free or starch-free
  • Goat milk is in the recipe, which matters if you are avoiding milk ingredients
NutriSource Ocean Select grain-free cat food

NutriSource Ocean Select grain-free cat food

Best for: A healthy cat when you want a fish-first grain-free recipe and will scoop a 500 kcal cup

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages. Grain-free.
Opener
Trout, whitefish meal, salmon, peas, salmon meal.
Guarantee
Protein 40% min, fat 18% min, fiber 5% max, taurine 0.2% min.
Starred extras
Glucosamine 300 mg/kg min and chondroitin sulfate 200 mg/kg min. Not AAFCO-essential.
Calorie
4,006 kcal per kg, 500 kcal per cup. Cup about 4.4 oz.

The shop page lists trout, whitefish meal, salmon, peas, salmon meal, sunflower oil, and pea starch, then dried yeast, pea protein, flax seed, garbanzo beans, and dried whole goat milk, with salmon oil and taurine later. It is formulated for all life stages. Guarantees: crude protein 40.0% min, crude fat 18.0% min, crude fiber 5.0% max, moisture 10.0% max, taurine 0.2% min, omega-6 1.4% min, omega-3 0.8% min, glucosamine 300 mg/kg min, chondroitin sulfate 200 mg/kg min, and 100 million CFU per pound. The glucosamine and chondroitin lines are starred as not recognized as essential by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. Calculated calories are 4,006 kcal per kg and 500 kcal per cup. The nutrient table repeats those two calorie figures. Typical EPA plus DHA is 0.95%. Typical carbohydrate is 19.95%. A cup is about 4.4 oz.

A canned salmon, trout, and whitefish Ocean Select is a different recipe, with a different calorie. This listing is the dry bag. Do not put the wet can’s number on this cup.

Pros

  • Trout is first, and the protein floor is 40%
  • The calorie line and the nutrient table both print 500 kcal per cup

Cons

  • Peas, pea starch, pea protein, and garbanzo beans are still in the recipe
  • A fish-first bag is the wrong pick if fish is the ingredient you are avoiding
NutriSource Chicken and Salmon Select

NutriSource Chicken and Salmon Select

Best for: A healthy cat when you will scoop less because the cup is about 564 kcal

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages. Grain-free.
Shop bullet
The page says 43% protein from deboned chicken and salmon.
Guarantee
Crude protein 43% min, fat 20% min, fiber 3% max, taurine 0.2% min.
Calorie
4,322 kcal per kg, 564 kcal per cup. Cup about 4.6 oz.
Also in the list
Turkey meal, potato starch, potato protein, and lamb meal.

The shop page lists deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, potato starch, chicken fat, potato protein, and salmon, then dried egg, garbanzo beans, lentils, flax seed, yeast extract, and lamb meal. A bullet says 43% protein from deboned chicken and salmon. The guaranteed analysis says crude protein 43.0% minimum, crude fat 20.0% minimum, crude fiber 3.0% maximum, moisture 10.0% maximum, and taurine 0.2% minimum, with omega-6 at 2.9% minimum and omega-3 at 0.5% minimum, plus 100 million CFU per pound. Those are not the same sentence. The guarantee is a minimum on the whole food. Turkey meal, potato protein, egg, and lamb meal are also in the list. Calculated calories are 4,322 kcal per kg and 564 kcal per cup. The nutrient table repeats 564 and 4,322. Typical carbohydrate is 18.61%. A cup is about 4.6 oz.

Scoop this like itself. A cup of this recipe is not a cup of Senior and Weight Management, and it is not a cup of Chicken and Rice. A canned Chicken and Salmon Select also exists, at about 172 kcal per 5.5 oz on its own shop page. That can is not this bag.

Pros

  • The cup calorie is printed, and it is far above the senior cup
  • The calorie line and the nutrient table agree at 564 kcal per cup

Cons

  • The 43% bullet is easy to read as if only two ingredients supply that protein
  • Lamb meal is in a bag whose name is chicken and salmon
PureVita Chicken and Peas grain-free cat food

PureVita Chicken and Peas grain-free cat food

Best for: A healthy cat when you want chicken as the only named animal protein and you will still read the pea list

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages.
Brand line
Single-source animal protein. Grain-free and potato-free.
Opener
Chicken, chicken meal, peas, pea flour, chicken fat.
Guarantee
Protein 32% min, fat 18% min, fiber 6.5% max, taurine 0.15% min.
Calorie
4,063 kcal per kg, 484 kcal per cup. Cup about 4.2 oz.

PureVita is the limited-ingredient line sold beside NutriSource. The shop page says the entrées feature a single-source animal or fish protein, and this recipe’s bullet says a single-source animal protein that is grain-free and potato-free. Ingredients open with chicken, chicken meal, peas, pea flour, and chicken fat, then dried egg, flax seed, dried yeast, pea fiber, pea starch, and dried tomato pomace, with carrots, cranberries, apricots, and cherries later. It is formulated for all life stages. Guarantees: crude protein 32.0% min, crude fat 18.0% min, crude fiber 6.5% max, moisture 10.0% max, taurine 0.15% min, omega-6 2.9% min, omega-3 0.6% min, and 100 million CFU per pound. Calculated calories are 4,063 kcal per kg and 484 kcal per cup. Typical carbohydrate is 27.66%. A cup is about 4.2 oz.

Limited ingredient here means a shorter animal list, not a short panel. A bullet says the diet features proteinated BioPlex trace minerals, and it names zinc, iron, copper, manganese, and cobalt. The mineral parenthesis on the same page is iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, ethylenediamine dihydroiodide, and sodium selenite. Cobalt is in the bullet and not in that parenthesis. Do not add it to the ingredient list from the bullet, and do not delete the bullet because the parenthesis is shorter. A PureVita chicken wet entrée is a different recipe.

Pros

  • The animal list is chicken and chicken meal, which the Select blends are not
  • The page says grain-free and potato-free in those words

Cons

  • Peas, pea flour, pea fiber, and pea starch are still a long plant stretch
  • A BioPlex bullet names cobalt, and the mineral parenthesis we read does not list cobalt
NutriSource Turkey and Turkey Liver Select, canned

NutriSource Turkey and Turkey Liver Select, canned

Best for: A healthy cat when you want moisture and you will use the calorie printed on the can you open

Adequacy
Formulated for all life stages.
Opener
Turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver, chickpeas, pumpkin, agar-agar.
Gram panel
Cal (calc) 181. Protein min 15.5 g, fat min 8.5 g, moisture max 120.9 g.
Nutrient table
204 kcal per 5.5 oz can and 1,305 kcal per kg.
Do not merge
181 and 204 are both printed. They are not the same number.

The current shop page lists turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver, chickpeas, pumpkin, natural flavor, and agar-agar, then yeast extract, potassium chloride, choline chloride, taurine, and marine microalgae oil. It says the recipe is formulated for all life stages. The nutrition-facts line prints Cal (calc) 181, protein minimum 15.5 g, fat minimum 8.5 g, carbohydrate maximum 4.7 g, fiber maximum 3.9 g, and moisture maximum 120.9 g. The nutrient table on the same page prints 204 kcal per 5.5 oz can and 1,305 kcal per kg. Typical moisture on that table is 74.38%, typical protein 11.00%, typical fat 9.13%, and typical carbohydrate 3.16%.

Do not average 181 and 204. Do not delete one of them because an older recipe page used a percent panel and a single 204 kcal line. Feed the figure on the can in the carton. This can is not a cup of any dry food above. Refrigerate the unused portion, and keep water available. The brand says that in those words on its wet pages.

Pros

  • Moisture is the point of a can, and this one names turkey and turkey liver up front
  • The shop page shows the conflict instead of hiding it

Cons

  • Two calorie lines on one page will be mis-scooped if you pick only one from memory
  • Chickpeas are in the can, so grain-free wet is not legume-free

Good 4 Life is a supplement story, not a result

Shop copy on these foods says a proprietary system of four key ingredients supports gut health. The brand article on rotational feeding says Good 4 Life is included with canine and feline formulas, dry and wet, and it names LactoSacc, BioMos, BioPlex, and Sel-Plex. That is the company’s description. It is not a stool score from this page.

Match the words to the ingredient list. Chicken and Rice’s mineral parenthesis is four proteinates and does not print BioPlex, Sel-Plex, or selenium yeast. Senior’s BioPlex bullet names zinc, iron, copper, and manganese, and the parenthesis matches those four. PureVita’s bullet adds cobalt, and the parenthesis we read does not list cobalt. The dry guarantees that print a microorganism line say 100 million CFU per pound, and that line is starred as not an essential AAFCO nutrient. A CFU floor is not a promise that the bag still holds that count after months in a warm cupboard.

Grain-inclusive is not the grain-free bag

Chicken and Rice names brown rice and oatmeal. Salmon and Liver names brown rice and oatmeal. Senior names barley and oatmeal. Those three are the grain-inclusive side of this page. Country Select, Ocean Select, and Chicken and Salmon Select drop the grains and keep legumes or potato ingredients in the first stretch of the list. PureVita says grain-free and potato-free, then lists peas, pea flour, pea fiber, and pea starch. The turkey can uses chickpeas and agar-agar.

If the question is grain-free dry food as a category, the grain-free dry cat food page is a different set of bags. This page only needs the NutriSource and PureVita labels already linked. If the question is wet food in general, the wet cat food page is a different life-stage mix. The turkey can here is one recipe, not that roundup.

One cup is not one cup

The calculated lines are the ones to start with, and then you have to notice when the same page disagrees with itself. Chicken and Rice prints 470 kcal per cup on the calculated line and 471 in the nutrient table, with 4,134 kcal per kg calculated and 4,086 in the table. Senior prints 319 kcal per cup both times, but 3,250 kcal per kg calculated and 3,359 in the table. Country Select, Ocean Select, Chicken and Salmon Select, and PureVita agree with themselves on the cup figure we read. The turkey shop page does not agree with itself: 181 on the gram panel and 204 in the table.

Cup weight is part of the scoop. Chicken and Rice is about 4.1 oz per cup. Salmon and Liver is about 4.0 oz. Senior is about 3.5 oz. Country Select and PureVita are about 4.2 oz. Ocean Select is about 4.4 oz. Chicken and Salmon Select is about 4.6 oz. A heavier cup with a higher calorie is how a Select bag becomes a weight problem when someone keeps the Chicken and Rice volume. Senior’s chart is the lower-calorie adult tool. It is not a free pass to fill the bowl.

The 2021 dog recall, and the 2019 report list

On October 11, 2021, Tuffy’s Pet Foods recalled about 1,600 cases of Pure Vita Salmon Entrée dog food in a Tetra Pak carton because vitamin D might have been high. FDA’s announcement names UPC 0 73893 96202 1 and lots 0629101N1 and 0901101N1, with best-by dates of June 29, 2023, and September 1, 2023. The same announcement says no other Pure Vita dog or cat foods, or treats, were affected. That event is real. It is not a recall of these eight cat listings. It is also not a reason to skip a future alert.

FDA’s June 27, 2019 question page listed NutriSource among brands named in at least ten DCM reports, at 10 reports. The investigation described diets with peas, lentils, or potatoes in the first ingredients, and it was centered on dogs. The status report from the same day counted 9 feline reports through April 30, 2019. FDA later said it had not declared any specific product unsafe. A name on a report list is not proof that one of these bags caused heart disease. A murmur, a collapse, or a breed risk belongs with a veterinarian, not with a forum tally.

These labels fit when

  • Each listing is tied to a life-stage line we could read
  • Calories stay on the recipe that printed them, including the two turkey figures
  • Grain-inclusive and grain-free are not collapsed into one bag
  • Lamb meal and the cobalt bullet are left where the pages put them

Skip them when

  • You need one scoop that fits every NutriSource recipe
  • You will feed the senior bag as a kitten's only food
  • A veterinarian has already prescribed a different diet
  • You wanted a feeding trial or a price, and this page is labels

Who should buy which listing

  • You want one grain-inclusive bag for a healthy kitten and an adult: Chicken and Rice, and use that chart, including the 5-day mix when you switch.
  • You want the same lane with salmon and liver: Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver, at the 466 kcal line, not the rice line.
  • The cat is a less active adult and the bag must say maintenance: Senior and Weight Management. Leave it off the kitten.
  • You want grain-free poultry: Country Select. Read the pea and sweet-potato stretch before you buy it for a legume limit.
  • You want fish first: Ocean Select. Skip it if fish is the ingredient you are avoiding.
  • You will measure a rich cup: Chicken and Salmon Select. Remember lamb meal.
  • You want a single named animal protein: PureVita Chicken and Peas. It is still a pea recipe.
  • You want moisture: the turkey can, and reconcile 181 with 204 on the label in your hand.

When the bag is the wrong tool

Call a veterinarian for vomiting that continues, diarrhea, blood in the stool, a kitten who stops gaining, or a cat who is suddenly weak. These foods are daily diets. They are not a diagnosis, a heart workup, or a prescription. A hydrolyzed diet or another therapeutic food is the clinic’s decision. None of the eight listings is that prescription.

Also skip the bag when you will not read the panel. A variety of NutriSource recipes is how a senior statement gets borrowed by a kitten, and how a 564 kcal cup gets fed at a 319 kcal volume. The Cats Luv Us boarding desk can keep a cat on the food you already bought. Bring that food.

Bottom line

NutriSource cat food review starts with the life-stage line, then the calorie on that recipe. Chicken and Rice and Chicken Meal, Salmon and Liver are the grain-inclusive all-life-stages bags, near 470 and 466 kcal per cup. Senior and Weight Management is adult maintenance, near 319 kcal per cup, with 3,250 and 3,359 both printed as densities. Country Select, Ocean Select, and Chicken and Salmon Select are the grain-free dry trio at about 479, 500, and 564 kcal per cup, and the 564 kcal bag still lists lamb meal. PureVita Chicken and Peas is the single-animal-protein bag at about 484 kcal per cup, pea-heavy and potato-free. The turkey can is all life stages and prints both 181 and 204. Good 4 Life is the brand’s supplement language. The 2021 vitamin D recall was a Pure Vita dog carton. A kitten who is not gaining needs a clinic before a new bag.

NutriSource cat food review

Is NutriSource grain-free?

Some recipes are. Cat and Kitten Chicken and Rice, Chicken Meal Salmon and Liver, and Senior and Weight Management name grains. Country Select, Ocean Select, Chicken and Salmon Select, PureVita Chicken and Peas, and the turkey can are the grain-free listings on this page. Grain-free on these panels still includes peas, pea starch, garbanzo beans, lentils, potato, sweet potato, or chickpeas, depending on the recipe. It is not a no-plant claim.

Can a kitten eat every bag on this page?

No. Senior and Weight Management is formulated for the maintenance of adult cats. The shop page says that twice. The other seven listings we read say all life stages. All life stages can cover growth. Adult maintenance is not a kitten’s only food. A veterinary therapeutic diet is a third path, and it replaces both.

Are these cups the same number of calories?

No. Using the calculated lines: Chicken and Rice about 470 kcal per cup, Chicken Meal Salmon and Liver about 466, Senior about 319, Country Select about 479, Ocean Select about 500, Chicken and Salmon Select about 564, and PureVita about 484. Chicken and Rice also prints 471 in its nutrient table. Senior also prints 3,359 kcal per kg beside a calculated 3,250. The turkey can prints both 181 and 204 per 5.5 oz. Count the container you opened.

What is Good 4 Life?

NutriSource describes Good 4 Life as its supplement system. A brand article says the system is included with canine and feline formulas, dry and wet, and it names LactoSacc, BioMos, BioPlex, and Sel-Plex. Shop bullets on these cat foods shorten that to four key ingredients for gut health. The words BioPlex and Sel-Plex are not in the Chicken and Rice ingredient parenthesis we read. PureVita and Senior bullets do name BioPlex. A supplement story is not a clinical trial and not a treatment for vomiting or a diagnosed gut disease.

Does the 43% line on Chicken and Salmon Select mean only chicken and salmon?

The shop bullet says 43% protein from deboned chicken and salmon. The guarantee says crude protein 43% minimum. Turkey meal, potato protein, dried egg, and lamb meal are also on that ingredient list. Read the bullet as marketing beside a minimum. Do not treat it as a laboratory split of which ingredient supplied each point of protein.

Which calorie belongs on the turkey can?

The current shop page prints both. The nutrition-facts line says Cal (calc) 181. The nutrient table says 204 kcal per 5.5 oz can and 1,305 kcal per kg. Use the figure on the can in the carton. Do not average them, and do not copy either number onto a dry cup.

Was NutriSource cat food recalled?

The FDA company announcement dated October 11, 2021, is a Tuffy’s Pet Foods recall of about 1,600 cases of Pure Vita Salmon Entrée dog food in a Tetra Pak carton, for potentially elevated vitamin D. The UPC on that announcement is 0 73893 96202 1. The lots named are 0629101N1 and 0901101N1. The announcement says no other Pure Vita dog or cat foods, or treats, are affected. That is not a recall of the eight cat listings on this page. Check current alerts before you treat an old announcement as the last word.

What does the FDA DCM list mean for these bags?

In a June 27, 2019 question-and-answer page, FDA listed brands named in at least ten reports of dilated cardiomyopathy, and NutriSource was on that list with 10 reports. The same era of updates says the reports were mostly dogs. A June 27, 2019 status report counted 9 feline reports through April 30, 2019. FDA has said it has not declared any specific pet food product unsafe or definitively linked to the condition. Peas, lentils, and potatoes in the first ingredients are the pattern the agency described. A report tally is not a diagnosis. A cat with a heart concern needs a veterinarian.
